The following comment was posted under “Sgt Buddy James Hughie” page and it seemed appropriate to move it over too.

Just got a surprise Memorial Day phone call from my son, a LT. in the Navy. He is an IA in Afghanistan. His assignment is to mentor Afghan police. He told me he is stationed at camp Hughie. Had to look up Camp Hughie to find out about it. What I did find out was that Buddy Hughie was a hero. I can only hope and pray I never have to suffer the grief that those who knew Buddy Hughie have felt.
    My sincerest condolence.

    mssc54 replied:

Chris: Thank you so much for your sincerest condolences. Yes Buddy is, in fact, the epitomy of what a true American Hero is. Quite an honor to have a base named after you too. Ultimately, Buddy’s love for the Afghan people and duty to service as a combat medic cost all of us dearly. However, as my daughter says, we do get some degree of comfort knowing that he saved the lives of two wounded before being killed by that Taliban sniper. Perhaps, today, some Afghan boy is with his daddy because our American Hero did what no other dared try.

Thank you again and I pray for your son’s safe return.
