Sadly, we find “The Church” and “The World” once again on paralell paths.
Take for instance the well deserved reputation of Character, Honor and Duty the United States Marine Corps has. You never see anything about the Marine Corps in the news until some nut does something to draw a negative light on that institution.
Just like “The Church” you don’t hear of the valuable roll the Church plays in every day life. But you let one high profile minister “step in it” and it is like the shot heard around the world.
Let’s just face it… the world loves a car wreck!
I believe it all begins with the individual Christian. It has been my experience that very few people who say they are Christian will submit to authority and accountability.
Now, of course, they will SAY that they will submit to authority and accountability but that is a very difficult thing in today’s society of self sufficiency. After all we Christians are allowed to make every decision we want to based on what WE think is best in any given circumstance.
So, honestly, how is a person supposed to just say, “Okay, I will make all of “these” decisions on my own, (large purchases, what I drive, where I eat, etc.). But these “other” decisions that may affect my witness… (how I act, where I hang out, how I talk, my priorities, etc.)… I’m supposed to let someone else speak into my life on those “other” issues?!”
I think men (especially) deal with these issues of submission. After all we regurgitate it all the time; boasting proudly “WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS!” So how in the world could we need help? Ummmm, maybe it’s because… YOU’R A MAN! A man that thinks he needs no guidance is a man who is living with a heavy veil of deception over his life.
Then again there are Christians who SAY they will submit to authority and ask to be held accountable. Then when the one in authority over them points out that the Emperor has no clothes on… well they may just not be willing to see it or they get their little feelings hurt and skulk away to a softer place where it’s okay to sit anonymously in the congregation.
Ahhhh, it feels so good to be free of conviction. Well, enjoy it now.
Now on the other side of that coin, is the need for those willing to accept the roll of authoritarian or accountability partner. These too are few and far between (again this is in my view). You will often find that those who SAY they will do these things will, in fact, shrink from that responsibilty. This is due to either being inexperienced (accepted the responsibility to quickly) or they have participated in these rolls before only to be burned over and over again. However, it matters not how many times the authoritarian gets third degree burns, it is still their lot in life.
In any instance, I’m just happy to be a sheep. I hate the thought of having to stand the glare of being held doubly accountable!
I am running the race.
